A digital transformation initiative is underway to address rapid urbanisation, climate risks, and governance challenges in clusters of cities across Somalia. The objective of this project is to design, operationalise, and institutionalise a robust digital monitoring and carbon management system. This system will support the development of inclusive, resilient, and sustainable urban economic hubs.
The scope includes building an end-to-end digital platform for greening activities, featuring geo-tagging, QR-based traceability, and real-time dashboards. Advanced technologies such as AI and remote sensing tools are to be integrated for monitoring growth, soil carbon, and canopy cover. Key modules include digital mapping of nurseries and planting sites, farmer and community group enrollment, and a Carbon Trace tool to track carbon farming and sequestration activities at the community level.
Additional functionalities encompass nursery management—including seed sourcing, propagation, and seedling distribution with QR-coded tracking—and renewable energy monitoring to document solar generation and calculate diesel displacement in nursery operations. The system should also facilitate community and beneficiary engagement, emphasizing the inclusion of women, youth, and internally displaced persons. Monitoring and analytics capabilities will provide AI-driven insights on canopy growth, CO₂ sequestration, and greening performance indicators. The contract for this assignment is set for a one-year period.
