An Ontario school board is seeking a provider for symbol-based software to support K–12 communication and learning needs. The desired solution will enable educators, support staff, and students to create a wide array of materials using high-quality symbols and templates, suitable for constructing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems, visual schedules, social narratives, worksheets, core boards, and other educational supports. The software must feature a library of K–12-relevant sample materials, skin tone toggle functionality, tools for collaboration, and a process for user feedback to inform improvements.
Accessibility is a key requirement, with the solution demonstrating compatibility with screen readers, alt text, keyboard navigation, and offering intuitive navigation for users. Additional assets include AI integration for text-to-visual support, advanced text-to-symbol functionality, an image library with editing and background removal tools, as well as sample classroom templates and flexible grid-making features. The platform must support exporting files in PNG, JPEG, and PDF formats, image uploading and editing, and provide browser compatibility across Microsoft Edge and Chrome, as well as device compatibility for desktop PC, Apple, Chrome OS, and iOS devices.
Privacy and data residency requirements specify Canadian server hosting and compliance with Canadian privacy regulations. The software must support both Canadian English and Canadian French languages, with multilingual support considered a major asset. Technical requirements include cloud-based delivery with an offline option, role-based access controls, integration with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 for single sign-on, and secure file sharing and collaboration within the Board.
