The Ontario government is seeking to conduct a comprehensive scoping review of intervention strategies designed to reduce wildland firefighters’ exposure to harmful combustion emissions. Wildland firefighters face a heightened risk of developing chronic health conditions, including cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, as well as cancer, due to repeated exposure to emissions during various operational activities. These exposures occur not only during direct fire suppression, but also throughout mop-up and cold trailing, targeted burning, and fireline construction and maintenance—often involving the use of internal combustion engine power tools such as chain saws.
The intended review will involve a critical evaluation and synthesis of all relevant information sources, including peer-reviewed scientific literature, government reports, publications from firefighter unions and advocacy organizations, and materials from occupational health and safety organizations. The aim is to identify, assess, and summarize current strategies and best practices that can mediate exposure and reduce chronic disease risks among wildland firefighters. The reviewed activities encompass a broad range of duties, such as fire suppression, disaster response, and emergency rescue, all of which can result in harmful exposures. This initiative aligns with the recognized need for more research on firefighter cancer risk and the development of effective intervention strategies.
