The City of Alberta is seeking a consultant to develop a comprehensive heritage management framework and strategy. The selected consultant will guide the entire project lifecycle, from initiation through to completion, ensuring the resulting framework provides a strong foundation for all heritage-related work within the city. Key responsibilities include conducting background research, jurisdictional scans, and policy reviews, as well as assessing current heritage programs and processes.
The consultant will engage both internal city departments and a range of external stakeholders—including property owners, nonprofit heritage partners, cultural organizations, and indigenous communities—to gather input and ensure broad representation. There is a particular emphasis on the inclusion of indigenous perspectives, with the expectation to develop ongoing engagement strategies and best practice guidelines for indigenous heritage resource management. The scope also includes recommendations for guidelines, administrative processes, designation strategies, and tools relevant to heritage preservation for both city-owned and privately-owned assets.
Additionally, the consultant will propose methods for maintaining an inventory of heritage resources, recommend approaches to identifying and preserving indigenous heritage assets, and conduct research to identify potential sites of indigenous cultural significance.
